History | | Year established: | | | Benefitting Organization: | | | Typical field size: | | | Additional history: | Spindletop is a salt dome oil field located in south Beaumont. In 1901, a well at Spindeltop struck oil, at a
depth of 1,139 feet, what is know as the Lucas Gusher or the Lucas Geyser blew oil over 150 feet in the air at a rate of 100,000 barrels per day. It took nine days before the well was brought under control.
As the first major oil field located in the United States, the well tripled the entire oil production capability of the United States overnight.
Spindletop was the largest gusher the world had seen and catapulted Beaumont into one of the Unites States' first oil-field boomtowns. This cheap oil helped to fuel the incredible industrial expansion of the United States over the last 100 years.
